A breath of experimental fresh air or a blast that should go back to the past?

Hard going, but truly splendid.
Each era needs something individual to distinguish it from it's predecessor (So kids can tell their parents they've no idea what it's all about?), although Baroque & Roll is not a new concept (Dave Cousins former frontman of "The Strawbs" 2000 for example).
North American acts like Arcade Fire and the Decemberists have created gigantic worldwide followings with their drama, pathos and unusual instrumentation. The chorus at the end is much more conventional 80's Scot rock(Big Country) which is nice too and roots the sound a bit.
The tenor drum reminded me of the music at the beginning of the last "Pirates of the Caribbean" at the queue to the scaffold.

I think it's going to be parents explaining what it's all about to the kids with this one Mr C

A bit too 'head full of noise' for me - maybe I should turn the volume down

Ooh..quite a bit Beirut, a bit Jethro Tull, and yes a bit Pirates of the Carribean, Mr C very good at unpicking all the elements.
I found this vocal delivery rather compelling after a surfeit of whispy indie guitar vocals.
I take karter257's point, it is a bit full on, but just the thing to get you in the mood while getting ready for a party.
