A sharp suited, three piece is always a good beginning. Who thought of the name? What a bad idea to invite the critics directly to your weakest attribute!

This is immature music. If you'd seen "The Jam" in their beginnings in Woking, you might have heard such playing but I would suggest that even then the icy cool Rick Butler was more disciplined and restrained than this drummer and the work of Buckler and Foxton, so often highlighted in the great songs the band produced e.g. "Down in a Tube Station at Midnight", "Eton Rifles" are a testament to the value of the space between the sounds as well as the sounds themselves.

Weller knew all of Pete Townsend's works and was wise enough to borrow from the great man early on. Big sound isn't everything.
