Aren't Canadiens great - this has come as a great relief this week. Pure and simple. I loved it.

By 1970 Canada had really left it's permanent imprint on music history. For a huge country with a small population it has more great songwriters than it ought per capita. This track doesn't prove that Miriam Jones has the potential to join the likes of Joni and Neil Young, Cohen the barbarian, Alanis Morrisette. She will need to get angry and frustrated about some issues.

Wow, was that purely astonishment or did I hear a gauntlet crash to the floor? This is no Bovril Levine or K.D. and she might have gone off the boil, bored of the "Star maker machinery" while she was supposedly in love, but a genuine genius. If Miss Jones can come up with an album of the quality of "Jagged Little Pill" or "Supposed former infatuation Junkie" she'll have proved herself a Canadian national treasure.

What about the mighty Bachman Turner Overdrive??? or seriously Rufus Wainwright, Leonard Cohen, Brian Adams (okay, that can't be serious), that little rock chick whose name i can't remember what was plastered on every teenage girls wall about five years ago.......

Listening to this changed my mind about who should win the Mercury Prize. These 4 lads from Kendal come across like a cross between The Smiths, Joy Division and Talking Heads. Hypnotic and utterly great. CD £5 inc. p&p / Download £6.95
